Development Director

Glacier Peak Institute is a grassroots nonprofit established in the wake of the 2014 Oso Slide to serve rural youth and communities through outdoor learning and recreation. We empower youth to build resilient and sustainable rural communities and healthy ecosystems across the Glacier Peak region of Western Washington through innovative, action-based education programs integrating Science, Technology, recreation, Engineering, art, Mathematics, and skill-building (STrEaMs).

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the Development Director is a full-time position responsible for overseeing and growing Glacier Peak Institute’s revenue and donor base. Glacier Peak Institute secures revenue through donations, sponsorships, and grants, with a need to significantly grow support through major gifts and individual giving.

The Development Director will be responsible for overseeing and executing our four-year fundraising plan. Key priorities of GPI’s fundraising plan include establishing a monthly giving program, increasing the number of individual donors by 20% from year to year, and training our development committee and board of directors to increase peer to peer fundraising. The Development Director will also assist with prospect research and relationship building in connection with GPI’s capital campaign.

Candidates for this position should be based in Northwest Washington or be willing to relocate. This position will have flexibility to work from home but must be able to attend occasional meetings or events in the Darrington area.

Donor Engagement Relations (45%)

  • Development and retention of individual, corporate, and foundation support
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, oversee communications with individual donors, private foundations, and public granting agencies.
  • Identification and cultivation of prospective donors
  • Oversee donor database in Little Green Light, manage online giving platforms, and maintain relevant fundraising pages on organization website
  • Plan and implement a minimum of two donor appreciation events throughout the year
  • Write and disseminate press releases on organizational successes

Overall Development Strategy Management (20%)

  • Oversees all development activities, including participating in annual planning and budgeting with the Executive Director and Director of Special Initiatives, events, donor relations, and correspondence.
  • Attend monthly board meetings to report on development activities and results
  • Provide materials and support to the board and development committee to help set them up for fundraising success
  • Engage in research and relationship building for the capital campaign
  • Collaborate with staff, board, and development committee for storytelling purposes and communicate our goals, mission, vision, successes, and resilience with the community
  • Research advancements and changes pertinent to Glacier Peak Institute’s public support needs, mission, and programs

Grants (20%)

  • Work with the Executive Director to research and set annual grant priorities
  • Develop narratives and strategy for grant proposals
  • Outreach to foundation boards to establish and maintain relationships
  • Assist the Executive Director and the Director of Special Initiatives with post-award management

Events (15%)

  • Plan, budget, and execute an annual spring fundraiser
  • Plan and coordinate giving events and campaigns
  • Manage post event donor relations

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Approximately five years’ experience working in a similar role where you are fundraising, running a committee, or leading a political campaign that involves heavy project coordination and timelines.
  • Experience working for a startup or grassroots organization/group
  • Effective verbal written and communication skills
  • Leadership experience (non-supervisory)
  • Confidence and enthusiasm in discovering new pathways for communication and community engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for the grant writing and building relationships
  • Experience with fundraising, major gifts, planned-giving, grant writing, and special events.
  • Experience with volunteer recruitment and leadership

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role will be $75,000 - $85,000 per year

*Relocation assistance may be available based on business needs and/or desire to live closer to the office prior to your first day of work.
