Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Art, or related field with at least two years of experience; or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years
  • In-depth knowledge and proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Analytics, Tableau Data Visualization, and Social Media Tools (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Vimeo, LinkedIn, and other tools)
  • Ability to build and edit emails with marketing tool, such as Mailchimp or ActiveCampaign
  • Experience managing website edits with content management system (CMS)
  • Established commitment to diversity and cross-cultural communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating design and communications across multiple University partnerships
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational skills balancing multiple projects simultaneously, managing versions and approvals
  • Self-motivated, independent worker and demonstrated ability to work within a team
  • Photography and videography; video editing skills
  • Ability to assist researchers with infographics to communicate research findings.
  • Experience in program coordination and leadership

Position Overview

The Graphic Designer (Marketing/Communications- Graphic/visual Design, 8342GD) is a 75% FTE University employee positioned in the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) at the School of Social Work. CASCW has joined the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) in a joint project to co-create and operate the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA). The Graphic Designer serves as a critical member of the integrated teams of DHS and the University. This position is responsible for creating graphic design for the day-to-day support of promotion and communication materials that will be used within and outside of the Academy. The Graphic Designer will provide support in the establishment and ongoing operations of the new Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy.

This position will report to the Communications Coordinator and will be located off campus at the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy, which is two miles north of the St. Paul Campus.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $37,627 to $50,170. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.

This position is fully grant funded.

Job Responsibilities

Graphic and Multimedia Design (50%)

  • Create the overall design for electronic promotional materials (i.e. motion graphics, banner) and special electronic marketing pieces.
  • Develop and design color, text, and graphic standards/templates for presentations and brochures, and develop promotional elements to be used to enhance the activities of the Academy.
  • Develop the design and layout for all Academy hard copy publications (briefs, training materials, etc).
  • Stay up to date on current design trends and best practices in web and print design.

Project and Team Management and Planning (40%)

  • Evaluate the impact of the graphics utilized in department communications; design and create new graphics based on results.
  • Create an editorial and publishing schedule for publications and digital postings, working with technical and content providers to keep all projects fresh, accurate, and up-to-date.
  • Consult with colleagues and Academy leadership on larger-scale graphics and design layouts as methods for achieving communication goals.
  • Facilitate small group and one-on-one meetings with project stakeholders.
  • Negotiate scope, timelines, resources and responsibilities for project releases.
  • Assist Academy staff with identifying cost estimates, staff time commitments, and other relevant factors as they relate to graphic design and publication.

Additional Duties (10%)

  • Provide support to the Communications Coordinator.
  • Work within the broader CEHD and University communications teams.
  • Attend relevant meetings and training.
  • Participate in bi-weekly supervision.

Academy Overview

The MNCWTA is a partnership between the University’s CASCW (see below) and the MN Dept. of Human Services. The newly formed MNCWTA is responsible for the training and professional development of Minnesota’s county and tribal child welfare frontline staff and supervisors. This dynamic team is in the process of redeveloping its curriculum, training modalities, evaluation processes etc. The MNCWTA occupies a newly renovated building off campus, in Roseville, MN. Just minutes from the St. Paul campus.

Center Overview

The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) was established in 1992 with federal Title IV-E funding and a grant from the Bush Foundation. The Center brings the University of Minnesota together with county, tribal, state and community social services in a partnership dedicated to improving the lives of children and families involved with public child welfare. Substantial funding for the Center continues to come from federal Title IV-E funds and support from the University of Minnesota, the College of Education and Human Development and the School of Social Work. CASCW fulfills its mission by focusing its efforts around three primary areas: Professional Education, Outreach, and Research & Evaluation.

Founded in 1917, the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is the oldest social work program in a public land-grant university. SSW is a unit within the College of Education and Human Development, one of the leading colleges of education and human development in the country with programs and research in areas such as educational psychology, child development, organizational leadership, family social science, and disabilities. The School offers a number of educational programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
