The Supervisory Social Worker position is in the HUD/VASH unit within the Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences Service (MHBSS) line at the VA Providence Healthcare Systems (VAPHCS). This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Supervisory Social Worker is responsible for supervising licensed and unlicensed staff within the HUD-VASH program, including HUD-VASH Social Work Case Managers. The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Provides case management for a caseload of Veterans in the HUDVASH program.
  • Meets on a regular basis with supervisees to assess clinical performance and provide clinical support and consultation.
  • Provides input into to the overall performance evaluation of their supervisees in conjunction with any local or national HUD-VASH performance measures.
  • Actively participates in the HUD-VASH program conference calls and attends trainings offered by the HUD-VASH program at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • Follows local policy and National Directive for the HUD-VASH program to include following policies and documentation requirements.
  • Actively participates in program planning and development, advising the Program Coordinator of shifting trends with caseloads and identifying the need for and making recommendations on program procedure of policy changes based upon work experiences.
  • Improves professional skills, participating in planning, and executing specific staff development projects, attending seminars and institutes, and participating in training programs of other disciplines, if requested.
  • Performs accountability functions to include documenting all contacts with patients and families in medical charts and completes statistical and other reports in accordance with VA Medical Center and respective professional discipline service policies.
  • Works with VA Medical Center multi-discipline teams and collaborates with community agencies to strive for developing more effective and efficient ways of delivering healthcare services to HUD-VASH program veterans.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66 .

Basic Requirements :

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education . Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to
  • ASWB Examination: Havecompleted and passed the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) advanced generalist or clinical examination
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).



Grade Determinations :
GS-12 Supervisory Social Worker

Education and Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
(b) Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
(c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
(d) Ability to provide staff training and development.
(e) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.

Physical Requirements: Traveling throughout the medical center and the community is required, as is performing activities involving sitting, walking, and standing, bending, and carrying such items as books, papers, and files. In carrying out responsibilities it may be necessary for the incumbent to travel into the community where he/she conducts interviews with the veterans, their families, representatives of community health and welfare agencies and law enforcement agencies.
