Job Description

The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking candidates who are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of Pennsylvania's citizens and environment. The Sanitarian is responsible for carrying out a range of tasks in a designated area for the Commonwealth, which includes overseeing facilities to guarantee adherence to the rules and regulations set by the Commonwealth for public drinking water supplies. This role involves implementing and enforcing these regulations, as well as working on improving public water systems and educating the community. As an Environmental Trainee, you will undergo a comprehensive one-year training program, both formal and on-the-job, to gain the necessary skills and knowledge required to fulfill the responsibilities of a Sanitarian.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel required for site visits.
  • Telework:  You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. You will have to report to the office 1 day a month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Ebensburg.
  • Salary:   In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field;  or
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits. 

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
